Studying for the Test
I am studying for the GFI (Group Fitness Instructor) test. I'm hoping to be ready in May. I have all the materials that I need, thanks to American Council on Exercise. Those first chapters in the Essentials of Exercise were brutal but I pressed through and finished them. I do like the DVD that came with it.
My experience with group fitness is as a volunteer. For two years, I was an instructor with a group called Bone Builders. We had 10 basic exercise that we taught to men and women over 55, twice a week at the local recreation center. The hour long class started with warm ups, balance exercises, the basic 10 bone builder exercises and cool down stretches. It was a great program and I learned so much both from the program and from the participants. We had participants from 55 to 92, mostly women and these women were amazing. They are active, with some of them taking more than one exercise class a day. They are social, getting together for lunches, church, day bus trips and visiting relatives all over the world. And they had so many life experiences.
So because of my positive experience as a unpaid volunteer, I decided that I wanted to branch out and get the GFI certification and specialize in the senior population. We are all getting older and moving for health and well being is so important.
I'll take you on my journey from volunteer to studying for the certification to teaching a new group and wherever that path leads. I'm excited and scared at the same time but that's a good thing, right?
The picture shown is of the study materials that I received fro A.C.E.
